4/Is there a before and after-school program for school-aged children?

We are pleased that we can accommodate several school-aged children in our Family Centre on the 2nd floor. Please have a look at the SCHOOL AGE PROGRAM section for additional information.

5/Who runs the centre?

Play, Learn, Grow in Bedford is a family business, owned and operated by siblings, Sonia, Lyla and Jamil.

Sonia Hage-Cameron, Owner/Operator - Sonia brings over 20 years experience in varied aspects of the childcare field.  Sonia began her career as an Early Childhood Educator in a number of preschools in HRM. Sonia continued her studies, graduating in the first class of the MA in Child Youth Studies at Mount Saint Vincent University.    Over the years Sonia has gained valuable and varied experiences in numerous child and youth-related roles including working with children and families at the IWK, as a developmental coordinator for children with special needs, faculty member as St. Joseph’s College and as a community outreach worker.

Sonia looks forward to drawing on these experiences as she plans, organized and manages this new and exciting venture for the families in and around Bedford.  During her time away from work, Sonia enjoys spending quality time with her family which includes her husband and her three school-aged children.  Sonia also enjoys travelling and reading.

Lyla Hage-Owner/Business Manager - Lyla has an extensive and varied background in business, communications, project management, design and teaching.  Over the past 20+ years Lyla has worked in a wide range of large organizations and small businesses.  Her business and communication background and experience, combined with her attention to detail and marketing skills will serve her well as she manages the day-to-day operations and business end of this new venture.  In her time away from work, Lyla enjoys travelling anywhere and everywhere, going for runs in her North End neighbourhood, and reading novels.

Jamil Hage-Owner - Jamil brings several years of small business and construction/development experience.  Leading and managing numerous building and development projects throughout HRM, Jamil has extensive experience running his family’s construction/development company, managing the day-to-day operations of the business and finding interesting and unique business opportunities.  Jamil lives in Halifax with his growing family and spends his free time with family, volunteering in a variety of community organizations, and working on his golf swing.

6/Are your employees trained?  What are their qualifications?

All staff are fully trained to work with young children (Early Childhood Education diploma/degree and/or Bachelor of Education degree) and all have the required background checks completed.  Our staff is also trained in emergency first aid and CPR.

7/What kinds of meals and snacks do you offer?

Our meals and snacks are in accordance with the nutritional standards set by the Department of Community Services.   Our students are given two healthy snacks (morning and afternoon) as well as a hot, homemade lunch each day.  We offer a variety of healthy and nutritious food options so that the children will be exposed to different tastes and flavours where and when appropriate.  We are very pleased to have an on-site cook, Wendy, who prepares all snacks and meals each day.  Children are fed healthy, homemade snacks and meals each day in all of our programs.

8/Is there parking at the centre?

There is parking for 20 cars, plus 2 additional barrier-free spots.  The parking lot is located along the right side the centre.

9/Is there an outdoor playground?

Yes, we are very pleased to offer plenty of outdoor, green, play space with trees, grass, and natural surroundings.  The outdoor space includes a variety toys and games, as well as natural options for the children to enjoy including trees stumps, wood, flower beds and outdoor gardens.  Children are given plenty of time to explore the natural environment and enjoy the wonders and benefits of being outside.  We also take the children to parks and community spaces in our neighbourhood.

10/What will the children be doing in the preschool?

The children will be involved in a full day preschool program which will include time for child-directed play, nutritional snacks/lunch, quiet time and educational programming.  Programming will be based on the children’s interests, staff observations and developmentally appropriate activities.  We will also help prepare older children with the necessary skills needed for the transition to “big school”.

11/What is the Family Centre?

Our Family Centre is one of the things that makes Play, Learn, Grow unique!  We are very pleased to offer a two-storey CUSTOM-built building for our preschool and family centre.

The building was designed with kids in mind and is being built specifically for the purpose of housing the preschool.  We have many large windows, 9’ ceilings throughout, and lots of room for our children to play, learn and grow!  There are cubbies for the children’s coats and shoes, plenty of storage, and lots of space for toys, equipment, and individual and group time for the children.  The building is fully accessible, and has an elevator.

First floor-the first floor of the building  houses the preschool and toddler classrooms exclusively.  There are spacious and bright playrooms, a kitchen, the Director’s Office, bathrooms and a staff lunch room.

Second floor-the 2nd floor houses our part-time preschool classroom, and our school age classroom/multi-purpose room.  It also has several washrooms for our students and offices.

The multi-purpose room can also be rented during evenings and weekends for family-friendly activities and events.  Please contact us at 444 7544 for more information.

We look forward to receiving feedback from our families about their ideas for what we should offer in the Family Centre.  If you have suggestions please contact us.
